NSW: Blue Mountains

"Where the Mountains Truly are Blue"

The Deep Forged Valleys of Eucalypts and Sheer Sandstone are a Favourite for Visitors

Blue Mountains New South Wales

The road through Katoomba to Lithgow and on to Bathurst is a little more driver-friendly now than it was fifty-odd years ago! The high mountain roads follow sheer drops into the Megalong and Jamison Valleys that used to make for sometimes hazardous driving.

This is the site of the unique Three Sisters natural rock formation and a number of spectacular lookouts right close by the townships of Katoomba and Wentworth Falls. The names around here boast the history of the three men that first found a way across these foreboding mountains: Lawson, Wentworth and Blaxland.

After a number of failed attempts at finding a valley route, each being blocked by the sheer cliff-faces eventually encountered, the three explorers did what no-one else dared do, they climbed over the mountains along the rocky and dangerous mountain ridges. But they succeeded and the rest is history as they forged a new pass to the fertile lands beyond the 'prison' that the Great Dividing Range held them in.
